Statement from Harriet Cornell, Chair of Eleanor's Legacy
It is with great sadness that we share with you that on Thursday, August 18, Eleanor's Legacy and our community of progressive Democratic women lost an inspirational leader, Nora Bredes. Nora had fought a long and courageous battle against breast cancer.
Nora joined our board of directors in 2006 and was elected by her peers to serve as president of the board in April 2010. Nora was the right person to be president of Eleanor's Legacy because her ability to build coalitions and her tireless outreach fulfilled our belief that Eleanor's Legacy should have roots in every community in New York State - and assist women throughout the state in running for office. She would surely have had the blessing of Eleanor herself if Mrs. Roosevelt had been alive to know Nora. She would surely have had the blessing of Eleanor herself if Mrs. Roosevelt had been alive to know Nora. Please take a moment to read about Nora's amazing life and many accomplishments.
Though we have lost a dear friend and leader, the board of directors of Eleanor's Legacy is focused on our mission of helping pro-choice Democratic women across New York State run and win. Nora remained committed to mentoring, supporting, and electing women throughout our state - she was even planning to join a fundraiser for Suffolk County candidates in September. We will honor Nora's memory by working harder and smarter than ever.
We ask you to join us. There will be women running for county, town, and village office all over this state in November. These women follow in the footsteps of Nora, a former Suffolk County legislator, and they will need our help. Join us as we mentor, support, and elect as many qualified progressive women as we can this fall.
Though we say good-bye to Nora, we will remember her grace and passion and we will honor her legacy each day as we work to build the next generation of pro-choice Democratic women activists, voters, and leaders.
Sincerely,
Harriet Cornell, Chair of the Board of Directors
